AI Revolutionizes Search for Magnetic Materials

Researchers at the University of New Hampshire have made significant strides in identifying magnetic materials using artificial intelligence. By assembling the Northeast Materials Database, comprising 67,573 magnetic compounds, they have introduced 25 previously unrecognized high-temperature magnets. These advances promise to decrease reliance on rare earth elements crucial for technologies like electric vehicles and smartphones. The database, featured in Nature Communications, results from an AI system trained to extract and analyze scientific information. This effort, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, offers insights into millions of element combinations possible for innovative magnets. The researchers also envision broader applications for the AI model in education and data preservation.
