From Civilians to Soldiers: Ukraine's Transformation Under War

On February 24, 2022, Ukraine's reality shifted as Russian forces launched an invasion. Thousands of ordinary Ukrainians, who had never imagined themselves as soldiers, took up arms to defend their homes and families. Over the past four years, the conflict has required more conscripts, creating a new norm for men and women of different ages and backgrounds. Olena, a former nightclub worker, now serves as a pilot. Oleh, who was in publishing, and Anastasiia, a former barista, have both traded their civilian lives for military duty. Each has found new values and priorities amidst the chaos, facing the stark realities of war, loss, and hope. Roman, an elite bio-engineer, utilizes his skills as a combat medic; while Viktor, returning from abroad, has committed his life to the frontline. Serhii and Kyrylo endured captivity and are struggling to adjust back to civilian life, revealing the emotional and psychological toll the war has left on every soldier. Despite these hardships, their resolve remains firm: the fight continues as long as their homeland is under threat.
