TL;DR

A new study reveals hazardous chemicals in popular hair extensions, posing potential health risks. Black women may face higher exposure due to frequent use.

The Silent Spring Institute has conducted a study uncovering hazardous chemicals in hair extensions, including products made from human hair. This investigation highlights increasing health concerns, especially affecting black women who frequently use these products for cultural and personal reasons. Researchers found that these hair extensions often contain flames retardants and other harmful substances that exceed European safety thresholds. Dr. Elissia Franklin from Silent Spring Institute stated that the industry has long ignored the health of black women, who should not have to compromise between cultural expression and safety. The study involved analyzing 43 hair extension products using advanced chemical detection methods, revealing over 900 chemical signatures and identifying 169 chemicals across various classes. The investigation found that almost all samples contained multiple carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. Notably, 48 of these substances are listed under California's Proposition 65 for their cancer and reproductive harm risks. Calls for stronger regulatory measures are growing. New York and New Jersey are already in the process of passing legislation mandating ingredient disclosure. At the national level, the Safer Beauty Bill Package aims to enhance regulation of synthetic hair products.
